Frequently Asked Questions

Is the redaction permanent?

Yes. When you Apply Redactions, the file is flattened on the PDFSub Engine - the text and image content beneath each redaction rectangle is permanently removed from the PDF, not just visually covered. The downloaded file cannot be reverse-engineered to recover redacted content.

Can I redact specific text automatically?

Currently, you select redaction areas manually by clicking and dragging. For automatic detection of sensitive information like Social Security numbers or addresses, consider using our AI-powered data extraction tool to identify sensitive data first.

Will others be able to see the redacted content?

No. The Apply step removes the underlying content from the PDF - unlike browser-only redact tools that just draw opaque rectangles, the data beneath the redaction is genuinely gone. Anyone opening the file or running a text-extract tool sees only the redaction rectangles.

Can I redact multiple pages?

Yes, you can apply redactions to any page in your document. Each page can have multiple redaction areas.

What color are the redactions?

By default, redactions are black. You can optionally add a REDACTED label in white text over the blacked-out areas.

Is my document secure during redaction?

You preview redactions in your browser, then submit the file to the PDFSub Engine when you click Apply. The Engine is an isolated server with no internet access; files are encrypted in transit and auto-deleted after the flattened PDF is returned.
